Is It Necessary To Exaggerate To Make Money Online?

By Jerry J. Jansen On November 23, 2009 Under Internet Marketing

You see it often enough online, especially in the “make money” niche. You see the exaggerated income claims about learning how to make a six figure income in a few short months or being able to make money while you’re sleeping, and all for the incredibly low price of $97.00!

People keep using these tactics, so they must be working for them, right? Well, to a point, yes, they do work. However, in the long term scheme of things, they really don’t work, and I’ll tell you why.

In the short term, marketers who exaggerate, inflate, and generally mislead potential buyers will indeed make more money. The reason for this is basic human psychology. Deep down, we’re all pretty lazy and would rather do the least amount of work to get the greatest benefit. Then you have the base instinct of simple greed.  Who wouldn’t want to be able to vacation every month in Maui or own a big mansion and drive a shiny expensive sports car?

Sales pages that are misleading are carefully crafted to appeal to the emotions of the reader and to tap into that primal urge to sit on ones butt and get rich. But this only works for a short period of time. After the initial rush or sales, which can be considerable, two things happen: first, the initial idiot sales (people who believe all of the hype, regardless) will have dried up, and second, the smarter people who have purchased the program and had no success: i.e., they find out they can’t make money in their sleep, will tell their friends about how awful the program is. A few of these folks may post about it on forums like the Warrior Forum or Digital Point, and bad word of mouth publicity will doom the product to obscurity.

Contrast this to what happens to the more honest marketer who does not exaggerate and promotes his or her products on their merits. While this marketer may not get as many sales initially, the honest marketer will win the game over time. Why? Because the people who are actually serious about making money will do their research. While they have the same base instincts as anyone else, and while they may just as greedy, they realize that you can’t get rich overnight, and there’s absolutely no way you’re ever going to be able to make money without working for it. They’ll bide their time before choosing a program to join or a product to purchase. They will choose the honest marketer’s product because it makes sense and often, they will refer others to that marketer’s site because the product delivers on its promises.

So, is it necessary to exaggerate to make money online? No, not in the big scheme of things. While being honest may not net you as many sales at first, it will pay off big dividends later.
